Coal Tonnage Calculations
[e-Mail this Article]     [Print this Article]

HOW MUCH COAL IS UNDER MY PROPERTY?

There is a standard formula for calculating the tonnage of coal beneath any property in any given area. The factors in the formula are: (1) The thickness of the coal in feet (2) The area occupied by the coal in acres (3) A standard tonnage of 1800 tons per acre of coal with a thickness of 1 foot. (The 1800 tons per acre-foot reflects a standard specific gravity of 1.32 for bituminous coal.)

The Formula is:

Thickness (in feet) X area (in acres) X tonnage (1800 tons) = tons of coal (acres-foot)

Example Number 1:

Coal thickness = 6 feet
Area = 250 acres

6 (feet) X 250 (acres) X 1800 (tons) = 2,700,000 tons of coal in the ground

Example Number 2:

Coal thickness = 8 feet
Area = 40 acres

8 (feet) X 40 (acres) X 1800 (tons) = 576,000 tons of coal in the ground
