Defensive Driving Course

Transportation-Supervisory Training QUESTION:
A farmer member has received an official-looking notice in the mail saying he is required to take Supervisory Training regarding drugs and alcohol or face fines for non compliance with federal regulations. Is this a legitimate notice?

RESPONSE:
Most would call that letter “junk mail”, but the regulation it refers to is real.

Don’t be fooled by the deceptive appearance and threatening language; the company sending that letter is not a government agency. They might well be offering a worthy product (no quality assessment offered here), but odds are, most farmers don’t need it.

Supervisor training is required of anyone who employs any driver—including unpaid family members and the self-employed—who is required to be enrolled in a DOT drug screening program. Drug screening, in turn, is mandated for any driver who is REQUIRED to have a CDL. So, determine first whether a CDL is required, then go from there.

The two attached documents help to explain.
